Frequently Asked Questions About the 5K

Is the 5k race open to the public?
Girls on the Run and STRIDE of Coastal Carolina is an affiliate of the Wilmington Family YMCA. Our 5ks are YMCA 5ks to benefit GOTR/STRIDE. Registration is open to the public and anyone can participate.

How far is a 5k?
3.1 miles

Why the 5k distance?
It’s the most popular distance for road races. It’s long enough to be a challenge to many accomplished runners, but it’s short enough to be accessible to most reasonably active people.

Is it safe for young girls and boys to run a 5k? Runing/walking 3.1 miles a reasonable and highly attainable goal for most young people. Children’s bodies are suited for endurance exercise, especially with the gradual training schedule GOTR/STRIDE provide.

Can I bring my dog?
No. For safety of all the participants we ask that you leave any animals at home.

Are strollers allowed?
Yes. We welcome all ages of participants even if their cruising along!

Can I ride my bike alongside my son/daughter?
No. Only race staff are allowed on bikes. This is for safety of the participants.

What should I wear?
GOTR and STRIDE participants should wear their program t-shirts. If it is cold, dress in layers. A hat or visor may be beneficial to help with the sun. Running shoes should definitely be worn.

What is a running buddy?
Every child in the program must have a running buddy. A running buddy is someone who stays with the child the entire time they are on the course. They are there for encouragement and safety.

Are the 5ks timed?
Yes. We use chip timing. The chip is located in the back of the race bib that you will receive. The chip is activated once you cross the start/finish line. Running buddies are not timed but the GOTR/STRIDE participant that is running alongside them will be. Running buddies can be timed for an additional $10.

Do I have to come to packet pick-up?
We highly recommend coming the day before the race to packet pick-up. This will help cut down on wait time on race day. GOTR/STRIDE participants will receive their bibs from coaches on race day.

How long does the 5k event take place?
The entire event averages around 3 hours long.
GOTR/STRIDE participants show up an hour before the race begins. GOTR/STRIDE team recognition and race awards take place an hour and a half after race start. We encourage all participants to stay for recognition and award ceremony.

What is the refund policy for the 5k?
No refunds will be given for the 5k.
